We thought the Society was formed in about 1936 but this is wrong
and has been proved. As our late Vice President Mrs Murial Elms (who we are
sorry to say passed away this year aged 100) Put the record straight when we
were told her father joined the society in 1927.
In those days the membership fee was 1s. (one shilling) in today’s
money that was 5p. and we only charge £5.00 per year now so the subscription
has not gone up much when you consider today’s value with the old cost.
You must also remember that we have made tremendous strides forward
by expanding the society with monthly evening meetings, a store for members
to buy their gardening requirements, outings to different and interesting places
and plant sales.
There has always been an Annual Show and looking back through the memorabilia we have, in the mid 1940’s they had four sections in the show (Vegetables, Fruit, Flowers and Domestic).
If you look in our show section you will see that this has more than
doubled and there are over one hundred and forty classes to choose from.
So you can see that we are quite a good society and you are invited to
join, and become a member. Don’t let the olden day beings just fold up help
us to keep it going. Come along to an evening meeting, just as a guest and if
you enjoy it, which we are sure you will then just become a member and
participate in all the events.
